Finding The Filming Locations

The project began in November 2013 when taking an interest in filming locations used in the 1984 TV series. Although recognisable locations such as the Severn Valley Railway, places in Bewdley, Tewkesbury and Eastnor Castle were known, other locations had not been found. Some people were trying to find the location of Bob The Bakers shop. Our researcher tried to find it and was successful, then looked for further locations and found more. From there it turned into a personal project, managing to find 15 previously unknown locations: Road to Bob the Bakers (Bushley), Bob the Bakers and Market Square (Bromyard), Road with old lady with the ring (Bromyard), House with the Alsations (Bushley Green), Steps with the old lady (Bewdley), Kay Christmas shopping (Bromyard), King Arthur’s Camp interior (Beenham), Mudlark bridge (Cleobury Mortimer), Mudlark bridge and weir (Stottesdon), House Maria passes when scrobbled (Bushley Green), Chester Hills (Midsummer hill Malverns), Bridge at Chesters (Eastnor Castle grounds), Condicote Post Office (Bewdley), St Katharine Docks remaining cellars (London), Canal tunnel (Lord Wards tunnel Dudley). These were shared with a group on Facebook and the filming locations Google map set up by Paul a group member. A couple of other group members found 2 Scottish locations, Iain found the Seekings House snow scenes were at Raemoir House Hotel (Banchory) and Graham found King Arthur’s Camp exterior and snow (Lumphanan Peel ring).

There was little information to find locations. A couple of people asked production manager Tony Guyan and director Renny Rye, they could remember rough locations such as Worcestershire, Wyre Forest, Eastnor and Aberdeen. However finding missing locations took many weeks with long days of research. It was guessed that most filming was in towns around Bewdley and Eastnor so research begun looking at towns in surrounding areas, that would not have been possible a few years ago as it utilised recent technologies and image resources such as street level map views, aerial maps and geographical photos. Many towns, main streets and buildings were looked at, looking through hundreds of images. For harder to find locations such as alleyways and steps, local residents were asked if they could help check places and they were very friendly and helpful. When a location was found new photographs were taken or others were asked permission to use their photographs for the project and location information was collected.

Because of a growing collection of location details and photos it was decided to create a website to share them with others. The research coincided with the 30th anniversary of the original broadcast so it was a good time to launch the website with a retrospective of then and now filming location photos.

  1. On Saturday mornings the BBC broadcast Mike Read’s “Saturday Superstore”. I remember that there was a feature on “The Box of Delights” sometime in November or December 1984. There was a competition too (if memory serves, “Who wrote the original book of The Box of Delights” – or something similarly easy). Anyway, my memory of this all was that the prize was THE prop box. I could be wrong… (Or there may have been several versions of the Box?)

    • Hi Phil, Thank you for the information I had not heard of a feature on that programme. Director Renny said in the past there were several prop boxes at the time, one now resides with the cast member Kay’s family and he didn’t know what happened to the others.

  2. Don’t suppose you know anything about the full size caroplane? It looks a real one, but is the back tacked on by the production team? I know the flying version is a model. Any idea what happened to both?
